1st Grade Conversations |
One of my main duties is to take the students out of class and have conversation with them, to practice English. With my 5th graders, I usually take them out two by two to have conversation. I always start with "How are you?" and for them to explain how they are. I think there is always time to know how they are doing! I will ask about their weekends or weeks and then get into the questions. We practice different tenses and I correct grammar and sentence structure. I also have them have conversations with each other, as I observe and assist with grammar and words. One of the other things I do is bring them out individually to discuss their grades on their project, using a rubric, to help them improve on their next projects.
For my 5th graders I have also done a couple holiday activities with them. For thanksgiving, everyone had to design their own leaf and colour it a autumn colour and write, in English, what they were thankful for. They also designed Valentine's Day cards to someone they loved!

Again, I always ask, "how are you?" It is a bit more simple with the first graders. They are, "Fine!", "Happy!!", "Great!", "Fantastic!" and the occasional, "Angry." With my little ones, I bring cards and we practice them identifying what it is in a sentence. For example, we just had a unit on farm animals. I take the kids out 4 at a time and ask them, "What animal is this?" and the have to answer, "It is a.....". When then have other sentences to practice, such as, "Yes, it can." or "No, it can't." I will ask the students if the pig can fly or if the sheep can climb and they have to answer.
